How to Start a Profitable Career in Cybersecurity

This blog is part of ACI Learning's month-long effort observing Cybersecurity Awareness.

Are you considering a career in cybersecurity, but not sure where to start? First, congratulations – your interests are leading you down a promising path: The current gap between employment opportunities and skilled workers in this field is large and growing. At ACI Learning, we have options to meet your needs no matter your current level of experience. The field of cybersecurity is growing every year as companies realize how imperative it is to protect their networks and data. According to the Cybersecurity Ventures 2019 Cybersecurity Market Report, worldwide spending on cybersecurity is expected to exceed one trillion dollars by 2025. As companies struggle to keep up with the rising threat of cyber-crime, they're having one major problem: they can't find enough qualified candidates.

That's right, cybersecurity specialists are so in demand that the number of open positions has outstripped the number of qualified applicants by as much as two to one in some industries. So, what's holding applicants back? About one-third of information security jobs require a cybersecurity certification, compared to 23 percent of all IT jobs. In the U.S. alone, some 50,000 vacant jobs require the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification. But the number of certificate holders is only about 73,500, according to the Information Security System Certification Consortium, and most of them are already working. ACI Learning offers multiple cybersecurity training programs that can prepare you to enter or advance within this exciting industry. Let’s look at some of the key training routes and the roles that fit them within cybersecurity:
