Linux in the Cloud
Linux in the Cloud Overview
The Linux in the Cloud series focuses on implementing the Linux operating system in a virtualized environment. Companies are relying less and less on dedicated hardware and are instead turning to shared hardware to optimize resource utilization and increase deployment flexibility. The hosts demonstrate virtualizing Linux using technologies like KVM and Docker as well as public cloud deployments using Amazon EC2 and Microsoft Azure.

Hello and thank you for joining us for
this overview of Linux in the Cloud.
Don can you tell us about
Linux in the Cloud?
What is it all about?
Well in this series we're gonna be
taking a look at what it's like to run
the Linux operating system on
top of various cloud services.
A lot of people are virtualizing
environments now, either doing
it in private clouds or public clouds and
clinics is a big part of that.
For the most, it runs kind of the same
on an actual hardware verses on cloud or
virtualized hardware.
But in this series we're gonna
focus on those little differences,
the things that make it a little bit
different that people get intimidated by.
The view it as a risk,
they don't want to deploy.
We're gonna take a look at what's involved
in that and see what it takes to actually
get this up and
running in a modern cloud infrastructure.
Okay, and
who is this show targeted towards?
Mainly this is gonna be targeted
towards system administrators.
If you're responsible for supporting
a Linux infrastructure, and you've got
on-premises equipment and now you're
starting to make that step into the cloud.
Be it a private cloud with your
own virtualization servers or
a public cloud with Amazon,
or Microsoft, or
somebody like that,
it's a little tricky to make that jump.
And so
this is really targeted towards you.
So Don,
is there a certification involved in this?
There's a number of cloud
certifications out there, but
we're not gonna focus on that.
We're just gonna try and
keep this as an introductory type thing,
that's general audience.
If you just wanna learn and be aware,
that's what this series is all about.
So it's more focused on a technical
skill than it is a certification.
And,
what topics are available in this show?
Well, we're really covering
pretty much anything people ask for.
But the main ones that we're gonna cover
here initially are gonna be Linux on KVM.
KVM is tha Kernel Virtual Machine.
It's the service that really Amazon
web services uses under the hood,
you can run it privately.
So we'll talk about it KVM host and
then actually run Linux as
KVM guest on top of that.
So creating a virtualized environment
entirely off of open source KVM.
Then we'll take a look at Amazon EC2.
So if you're using the elastic compute
cloud and you're deploying instances,
VM's there, we'll see what it's like to
get Linux up and running inside of AWS.
Then we're gonna move into
the Microsoft side of thing,
I know it's funny to say that.
Well we're gonna talk about
Microsoft on a Linux show.
But it's really important because
Microsoft Azure is the number two player
in cloud services right now, they have
created a massive infrastructure.
So we'll see how to build up
our Linux virtual machines,
get them thrown on top of Azure.
And even though we're using a Microsoft
service we can still say in the Linux
world and deploy things that we want.
And then we're also going to really
bridge the gap and talk about Docker.
Docker is a IT industry buzz word and
if you're a developer, you've
got to learn that system administrators
are largely being neglected on this.
And so I wanna take the time to show you
guys what Docker is, how it works, and
we'll see how we can run Linux
inside of our Docker containers.
As well as use Linux as our Docker host
to be able to power that environment and
give a chance to see that.
So these are all pretty typical
cloud type deployments, and
we're gonna walk through them,
get comfortable with it, and
make it where we can all recognize how
we can be using Linux as a ,loud OS.
Thank you, Don.
So Linux in the Cloud sounds like a show
you'd be interested in, and it should be,
watch every single episode of
Linux in the Cloud on ITProTV.
